Bringing the Human Touch to web3 with web2.5

How to achieve the mass adoption of a superior technology

"If the infrastructure doesn’t support human expectations, we need better infrastructure.” - NTU Co-Founder, James Bourque

At MIN3, we are massively bullish on technology, in particular, web3 (aka crypto, blockchain). While web3 promises many benefits like democratisation, privacy protection, transparency, censorship resistance, ownership, disintermediation and proof of personhood (to name a few), the current web3 user experience has some friction points that deter widespread adoption.web3  suffers from a number of the challenges that you would expect from an emerging technology e.g:

  • Clunky UX

  • Misinformation spread by parties threatened by a potential change to the status quo

  • The presence of bad actors taking advantage of information asymmetry and weak regulation to make a quick buck

  • The brash behaviour of some of early adopters that have made a fortune in the space,  this puts some potential adopters off

Let’s work through a familiar example;

For example, requiring users to install browser extensions and connect crypto wallets introduces extra steps that seem foreign to most internet users today. And issues like lost private keys, gas fees, and understanding how to use dapps create learning curves that reduce accessibility for the mainstream public.But, for the majority of people, web3 doesn’t need to be part of the conversation.  No great applications lead with the technology.  Do Instagram’s users care that the developers chose to use Python as the coding language for the back-end of the application, or that they use PostgreSQL and Cassandra as the database technology?  No - users only care about the experience of interacting with the appThat's why we advocate a "web2.5" approach - keeping the decentralised web3 infrastructure under the hood, while maintaining a familiar web2 user interface on the front-end.

For our clients' products and services, we seamlessly integrate the back-end decentralised technologies like blockchains, tokens, and self-sovereign identity - without changing the user journey. Users can enjoy the same smooth, recognisable experiences they're accustomed to, while benefiting from the increased transparency, security, and control that web3 enables behind the scenes.This allows our clients to incrementally adopt web3 tech without alienating their established users. As public understanding and demand for web3 grows over time, products can progressively decentralise the front-end as well. But for now, a web2.5 approach helps transition familiar interfaces to take advantage of web3 capabilities in a non-disruptive manner.

The internet will only transform if people actually use and want decentralised apps. So we believe carefully evolving user experiences, not dramatically altering them, is the smartest path forward. By keeping web3 in the background for now, we can onboard users in a frictionless way - and lay the foundation for a more equitable and user-controlled internet over time.
